Scituate Teachers Agree to Salary Freeze

Scituate teachers voted Wednesday to freeze their salaries for the 2009-2010 school year.  Members of the Scituate
Teachers’ Association also approved a measure which provides for a 26 week pay cycle - intended to assist the town
in its transition to a new fiscal year.

The Association agreed to the changes at the request of the Scituate Town Council and the Scituate School
Committee.  The move alleviates the need for teacher layoffs due to budgetary reasons for the 2009-2010 school
year.  In exchange for the concessions, the agreement would extend the terms of the existing contract through the
2011-2012 school year.

STA President Ken Abrams stated that “[Scituate teachers] are pleased to be able to work cooperatively with the
Town Council and School Committee.  Our membership understands the need for a salary freeze in the present
economic environment.  The Association appreciates the long term support of Scituate taxpayers.”

The School Committee is expected to vote on the matter at its upcoming April 7 meeting.

The Association, an affiliate of the NEA of Rhode Island (www.NEARI.org), represents approximately 145 Scituate
teachers.
